Vienna has so much more to offer than you see here!!  From palaces to cathedrals, music to horse shows!  We didn't get to all of it before we moved away.

Be sure to check out Momondo if you're looking to book a trip.  I really like how they have their page laid out giving price estimates for the year along with snippets of information about your destination.

Have you been to Vienna?  What was your favorite?

It's Not Vienna's Fault

Vienna, Austria, expat, travel,
Downtown Vienna
Ever have a mishap while traveling or living abroad? Maybe you lost your passport, your luggage was stolen, your reservation wasn't made, your visa was messed up or denied or it just seemed like nothing was working out as planned. Did it taint your thoughts of the place you were in?

That was Vienna for us. Really, it's not Vienna's fault. It just wasn't the best season of our expat journey. Now, I'm a believer in the Bible and I know that God has a reason for everything and he's not going to give us anything we can't handle. This was just one of those rough seasons in our lives. We had moved from Spain, and let me tell you, me and the kids cried when we had to leave.  We all had fallen head over heels in love with Spain and our lives there.  For work purposes we needed to move to Vienna.  Mentally, we probably weren't starting off in the right frame of mind. We were missing our new home tremendously.

The Gloriette
I did my best to create a wonderful life for us in Vienna.  We found a sweet little quirky house with a garden and tried my hardest to make this house our home.  The kids were attending a great Christian school, ICSV, the kids and I loved their teachers, I was helping at the school, we were part of a new international church start, and I had some great girlfriends (one I made through this very blog before getting there).  So much good stuff was going on, but it just seemed that visa issues and work junk were overshadowing the good.

If I'm being really honest here, my heart just wasn't in it and I was miserable at times.  Do I have any regrets about our time there?  Hmmmm.....yes and no.  In many ways I think we made the most of it. We had all those great things I mentioned earlier that helped make the time better.  We grew in many ways and made some friends that we will be connected to for a long time to come.  I just regret not getting out to explore the city and country more than we did.

Sometimes an experience abroad just doesn't go as planned.  Has this happened to you?  Did you make the most of it or was it hard to move past the circumstances?

Foods Across Europe

One of the things I love about having lived in several different countries is exposure to the local foods and learning to make it.

I've decide to feature a few foods from each place that we've lived in our expat journey.  Here goes!

Russia

Vereniki
vereniki, Russian, food, travel

A pasta dough stuffed with various fillings, similar to ravioli.  My favorite vereniki is stuffed with potatoes (Crazy, I know! Pasta stuffed with potatoes, but it's delicious!).  And for a sweet variety, vereniki stuffed with cherries served with a sweet sour cream sauce. Yum!

Salad Olivye (Potato Salad)
Russian, food, travel, salad,

This is my go to potato salad.  Packed full of all kinds of veggie goodness!

Borsch
Russian, food, travel, borsch

Some might be turned off by the beets or the color of this soup, but let me tell you.  There are lots of other flavors going on in there.  It is delicious with that dollop of sour cream!

I've made salad olivye and borsch a few times, but I've never taken photos.  In my google search I came across Natasha's Kitchen.  I fell in love with her blog and she graciously allowed me to use her photos.  Check out some of her Russian/Ukrainian dishes as well as much more!

Czech Republic

Czcch Goulash with bread dumplings
Czech food, food, Czech Republic, travel, goulash

A bit different from the Hungarian goulash, but still so very tasty!  And a fun touch to be served from a pot like the one above.

Trdelnik
Czech food, food, Czech Republic, travel, trdelnik

My favorite street snack!  A pastry cooked over an open flame on a round pin called a trdlo and once finished, rolled in cinnamon and sugar and sometimes almonds.

Spain

You learned from last weeks post how much I love churros!  I also have to add to the list.....

Paella
Spain, Spanish food, food, paella, travel

I fell in love with paella while in Spain.  So much so I knew I needed to learn how to make it!  I blogged about it here.

Austria

Nürnberger Sausages
Nurnberger, Nurnberg, sausage, Germany, Austria

Now, before anyone tells me "wrong country" I do realize the Nürnberger is from Nürnberg, Germany.   I have never been a big sausage fan.  They've always smelled good to me, but I never found one I liked until I discovered the Nürnberger rostbratwurst.  These little gems are sold all over the place and it was while living in Austria that I fell in love with them, therefore, I am sticking them under Austria.  I am so glad there is a store close by here in England that sells these!

Good ole Austrian market fare, homemade chips and pumpkin spread.

Austria, Austrian food, chips, crisps, pumpkin, travel, food

You don't find much pumpkin that is sweetened in Austria.  It's savory in the way of spreads and soups.  And the homemade chips (or crisps) are amazing!  Fresh and crunchy!

England
Cream Tea (scone, clotted cream, jam & tea) and Afternoon Tea are my favorite favourite meal in England!

Sandwiches, scones and dessert!  Yes, please!

Wildpark Ernstbrunn

Spring has been birthday season among our friends.

We celebrated another double birthday party for some brother's this week at Wildpark Ernstbrunn.  It was more like a petting/feeding zoo.

Ernstbrunn is located 45 minutes north of Vienna.  We had a beautiful drive through the rolling countryside!

Sweet sisters!!  Such a good picture of my girls!

Deer, wolves, pigs, even some mountain goats and bulls!

I've decided that American wolves (top right corner, below) are much prettier animals than European wolves (bottom left corner).

Karis was cracking me up trying to get up the nerve to feed this bull from her hand.
It's not that she was scared, it was that she did not like the idea of it slobbering all over her hand.
She went for it anyway!  And sure enough, that thing left a big ole handfull of slobber and dirt!  Ha!
Loved the birdhouses!

Lots of places for the kids to play and run around.

They were in kid paradise!  Unfortunately, the stinging nettle struck almost all the kids.  It is a plant common in Austria.  The plant has tiny little hairs that sting when brushed against the skin.  There were fields of them!

You know you have a good friend when she's willing to administer ointment to your child!  Thanks Kristi!

Time for eats!!

Kristi and I didn't wear appropriate foot attire.  I had no idea this place was hilly and so big.  At least I was in good sandal wearing company!!

After we ate it seemed that the party was starting to fall apart.  It's a bit humorous when I think back on it. Reegan got into some nettle and was unconsolable.  She doesn't have a high threshold for pain!  Thunderclouds started rolling in sending a brother and sister into a panic, poor things!!  It was a good time to make a quick dash to the car.  Luckily I had packed our rain jackets.  We didn't quite make it to the car before it started raining, but we were covered!

Raindrops on the way home.

It was a lot of fun, despite the ending!  We had a great time celebrating with our friends!!

16 March 2012

Nürnbergers

A famous German rostbratwürst, or as we know it, sausage, from the town of Nürnburg, Germany.
My little man who is going to turn into a Nürnberger, he loves these things so much!
I have never been a big sausage link fan.  They always smell good, but the taste never appeals to me.  I'm a big bacon eater!  But, I'm always curious to try them thinking I'll like them "this time."
Soon after arriving in Vienna, we had a brunch with our team and some Nürnbergers were brought.
I was turned off by their whitish color.  Just looked kind of "eww!"
Right on the package, straight from Nürnberg.
I took a bite and fell in love!  Ok, a little over dramatic, but it was definitely good!  I couldn't believe I liked them!
I keep thinking they are going to lose their appeal.  So far, they haven't.  And they show up for breakfast about 2-3 times a week!!
In reading through the link above,  I learned that Nürnbergers are protected by EU law!  Which means the Nürnberger can only be produced in the city of Nürnberg.  Interesting!

So come on over and we'll be sure to serve you up some Nürnbergers.

If that doesn't appeal to you, how about a peanut butter cookie?!  I'll give you a whole one, not the half eaten one.  I promise!
Have a great weekend!!

The Best Wiener Schnitzel

December 24, 2011 1
We had some more friends living in Spain come to visit recently.  Zac, Leah & little Owen, who slept almost the entire time I was with them.  Ha!
I have to backtrack a little and tell you how we met.  We were in Carrfour (something a kin to Target) browsing the bedding department in Madrid.  They heard me speak English to the kids and we began talking.  You don't hear English much in Madrid, so when you do, it can be a nice thing to hear!  Plus, we had moved to Madrid within weeks of each other.

Anyway, we decided to meet for lunch, so I had to find the best Austrian food downtown.  My go to girl (Kristi) sent us to Figlmüller, which originally opened as a Wine Tavern and their own defined schnitzel.  Traditionally, schnitzel is pork pounded out thin, breaded and fried.  It's good!  I decided to get the chicken schnitzel, Zac got the pork schnitzel and Leah got the pork roast.  It was definitely the best schnitzel I've had in Vienna and Leah's roast was really good too!
This place had so much character.  I loved it!

Leah & I with Figlmüller behind us.
If you find yourself in Vienna, give it a try!  I don't think it will disappoint!!

And it's always nice to spend time with friends!!
