Road Trip, Arkansas

February 03, 2013 1

We packed up and hit the road for Little Rock, AR.  Reegan had been sick for a few days and just wasn't getting better.  That morning she complained of ear pain and had splotchy red spots all over her body.  I knew it was time she get to a doctor.

Look at her poor little red nose!

We had already planned to stop in Memphis to meet up with some friends that were also home for a short time and will be some of our neighbors in England.  We'd been texting about lunch arrangements and then I started texting about medical clinics!

We had about a 6 hour unplanned stay in Memphis (I was SO not happy with the wait at that clinic, but we got what we needed) getting us into Little Rock about 9.  Much later than we hoped, but we about fell into bed.  Jerry had a meeting all day and I had made plans to meet up with a friend I'd made through blogging.  I walked out to our van.  My phone rang, it was my mom. and I'd hardly said "hello" when I discovered our driver-side window was shattered in a bazillion pieces!!  Karis lost it and started screaming.

I hung up with my mom and called Jerry, interrupting his meeting.  I wasn't even sure he would pick up, but he did.  My brain doesn't function well under stressful situations.  He was and is usually my calm.  I headed for the lobby to report the break-in learning the police had already come and taken a report.  It's crazy to me that they didn't try to find a way to let us know!!

Hotels don't claim responsibility for theft on their property, so we were given no compensation.  I was a bit miffed about that, but what can ya do?!  They did send a guy out to help me clean it up.  The workers were so kind!

We had a ton of stuff in our car.  Snacks, souvenirs we'd picked up, travel pillows, jackets, trash!  Do you know, not one thing was taken!  We took all our valuables in with us, luckily!!!

You know what I did find other than little shards of glass spewed all over?  BLOOD!  Disgusting!!!  This crazy guy must have busted the window with his hand!!  Blood drops and smears all over.  Brennan didn't even want to get in the car, my little germaphob!  And so much for those security cameras they have mounted outside the hotel.  It was a lesson learned!! NEVER park on the backside of a hotel.  Always park by the front!!

I still wanted to meet up with my friend.  I knew it would be good to get our minds off of the event.  So we headed to Chick-fil-A.

Here is all our cute kiddos!!

Tara from Mrs Yellowhat found my blog through a link up we'd both been a part of.  She was living in Ukraine and I'm not sure where we were at the time!  Prague or Spain one.  Ha!  It's always fun to find other bloggers living overseas and can understand the ups and downs of living in another country.

They are now stationed in the Little Rock area.  We had a blast, our kids had a blast and we did not want to go!!

I'm SO glad we got to meet up!!  And we learned that their current pastor is friends of our froms seminary!  Funny how paths cross!

The rest of the weekend we spent resting and playing.  The hotel had a pool and the kids would have loved to spend all their time there.  We also had some fun dinner outings to Chuck E. Cheese and Olive Garden.  Sadly, I was not thinking of taking pictures during that time.

On Sunday we had a speaking engagement at the church of some friends.  We met the Gambills the last time we were in the US living at the seminary in Fort Worth.

Our girls were fast friends!  They even had a spontaneous sleep over Saturday night and the girls had a blast!!

We had a great time with them and with their church.

Luckily, most of the drama on our trip was past us.  Nothing else big happened on the way home except for a disgruntled semi-truck driver who decided to play games with us.  Scared us a bit, but we were ok.

We were SO glad to get home and put this trip behind us.  It's just always unfortunate when the bad things that happen stick with you just as much or more as the fun stuff!

We had such a good time seeing so many people and we will remember that for a long time!

A Trip Home, to Prague

Sunflower fields in northern Austria.

If you ask my littlest ones where they are from, they will most likely tell you Prague, Czech Republic.  They crack me up!  It's a difficult concept for them to grasp that they are American, born in Prague and lived only in America for 16 months.

A common billboard in Czech Republic.  An advertisement for their very popular sparking water.

We had the idea to take a quick trip to Prague before our 6 month return to the US.  We thought the kids would enjoy seeing the place where they hold so many memories.

Our first stop was to meet up with our long time Ukrainian friends.  We met within the first weeks of arriving to Prague, in 2001.  We've been through a lot together.  Love this family!

Wouldn't you know, we forgot our big camera.  Please excuse the fuzzy IPhone photos.

Our kids had such a great time together!  It doesn't matter if kids can't speak each other's language.  They still know how to play.  It's a universal activity!!  Hee hee!

Prague, on a summer night, is something you can't miss!!  It is gorgeous!

We only had one full day in Prague.  So much of the city is compact and walkable that you really can see a lot in a short time.

We were surprised by the braveness of the peacocks at the Valdštejnská zahrada (Wallenstein Gardens).

I remember calling this the fairy tale wall.  I couldn't find any history on it, but it is a fascinating wall with hidden creatures in the stone.  You can see one of them below.

There are 3-4 owls living in the little house structure in the top right picture.

The view from Karluv Most, the famous Charles Bridge.

I never tire of these views!

The band performing in the picture above, right, is a jazz band.  Jazz was popular when it was  Czechoslovakia in the 1920s and became even more popular after World War II.
.
The area below the Prague Castle, and where the waterwheel (below) is located, is my most favorite area of Prague, Mala Stranska, or Lesser Town.  I just love this area!

Staromestska or Old Town Square.

I love the narrow cobblestone streets in this city!

And the statue (above right) is by a controversial Czech artist.  It is a statue of Wenceslas (you know, "Good King Wenceslas looked out.  On the feast of Stephen.....").  Short story is that it is making fun of politics of the country.

Since we were in the area we decided to eat at Prague's Hard Rock Cafe.

They really cater to kids with their own menu and if you are a part of the kid's club, the kids get a free sundae!!  Hard Rock has only been in Prague a few years.  Before that, this building was a crystal factory.  I remember shopping in this very building.

And the morning before we left we met up with one of Karis' first playmates, Katka.

We met some other friends, but we were so busy talking that I forgot to get the camera out!

It was a quick trip, but it was a fun time!!

It might be a bit before I get back to the blog as we head to Greece for an annual meeting this week.
So looking forward to our time there!

A Time With Friends at Schonbrunn

I've spoken of Schonbrunn several times on my blog and it is most definitely my favorite spot in Vienna!  If it just weren't so far away from our house, I'd be there more often!

Kristi & Mollie wanted to get family pictures taken before they left Vienna so we jumped at the chance to join them!

We started out by taking a train up to the Glorieta.

Buddies, Reegan & Ian, on the train!!

Karis & Thad, classmates, church friends and all around good buddies!  Aren't they sweet?!

Group shot!

I'm going to miss these guys as Mollie and her family move back to Mississippi, Kristi to Tennessee and us to England.  I'm so thankful for the precious times we had together!!

I'm not a big fan of ME being involved in jumping pictures, but these weren't too bad.  The kids loved it!

These next ones are my favorites though.
These crack me up!!  Brennan is not too fond of holding his sister's hand!!  Ha!

Sweet family!

Precious family!

I love this shot that Kristi captured!

Got all the kids in the jumping action!

"I thank my God every time I remember you." Philippians 1:3
This verse comes to mind when I think of these two!
What a blessing they have been to me this past year!

Kristi brought me to tears when she posted the above picture on facebook with this quote from C.S. Lewis:

“In friendship…we think we have chosen our peers. In reality a few years’ difference in the dates of our births, a few more miles between certain houses, the choice of one university instead of another…the accident of a topic being raised or not raised at a first meeting–any of these chances might have kept us apart. But, for a Christian, there are, strictly speaking no chances. A secret master of ceremonies has been at work. Christ, who said to the disciples, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you,” can truly say to every group of Christian friends, “Ye have not chosen one another but I have chosen you for one another.” The friendship is not a reward for our discriminating and good taste in finding one another out. It is the instrument by which God reveals to each of us the beauties of others.”  ~C.S. Lewis

One last photo op at the u-bahn station.

It's been quite a year.  It's not all been easy, but the Lord gave us some wonderful blessings through it all!

We're down to 5 weeks until we hit American soil!!  We can't wait!!

A Day Around Bled-town

This is going to be picture heavy!  So hard to chose a few!

I found a great vacation rental online called The Red House.  It was a great place for us!  I'd never seen a rental place have so much for kids!!  A wicker chest FULL of toys, baby items for those with small children, a Wii, lots of movies and much more.

Bled Vacation 1

We slept fairly well that first night, although Eli woke up EARLY, about 5:30!  So Kristi & Eli had an early start to the day.  They were both a bit sleepy, but we headed in to downtown Bled by mid-morning.  Our goal that day was to take a gondola out to the island and go up to the castle for a fantastic view of the lake!

We headed straight for the gondolas.  These gondolas hold up to about 18 people, we had 13 on our boat, which included a couple from Australia, a couple from England and a Swedish/Norwegian couple and our party of 7.  We had a good time chatting with all of them and they laughed at the antics and silly things our kids did and said!

Bled Vacation 33

The view from the lake is so beautiful and calming as the water laps at the boat.

Bled Vacation 13

As you can see, the kids loved playing in the water!

Arriving at the island the gondola rower gives you 30 minutes to explore (not quite enough time, but oh well).  We took a moment to take some family photos.

Bled Vacation 19

There are only a few buildings on the island housing the Assumption of Mary Pilgrimage Church, a souvenir shop and a cafe.  It is the most hilly island I have ever seen.  You have to climb about 100 steps to get up to the church/cafe/shop.  Maybe not that many, but it was a lot.

Bled Vacation 20

The view from the island does not disappoint.  I don't think much about Bled could be disappointing in the panorama department.  It is just that gorgeous!

Bled Vacation 24

Look at all those fish and how clear and green that water is!!

I'm so glad Kristi and Eli could come with us.  We had so much fun together!

Bled Vacation 43

We ate at a Slovenian Mexican restaurant for lunch.  It was pretty good!

Bled Vacation 53

Visited the Parish Church of St. Martin.
I love this photo collage Kristi put together.  Kristi did some research and found that this church was designed by Friedrich von Schmidt in 1905, who also did the Rathaus (city hall) and Votivkirche in Vienna.
We meandered along the lake taking in the sights.
Did a bit of window and souvenir shopping.  This shop felt as if we'd stepped into a quaint shop in my parent's town of Granbury, Texas!
The kremina rezinka, a dessert specific to the Park Hotel, had been recommended to us by some colleagues.  Yum!!

After our yummy dessert we made our way up to the Bled castle.

Love them!!

Bled Vacation 77

We decided to buy our souvenirs at the castle shop and had a nice little chat with the shop keeper.  A young, local guy who grew up in Bled.  He was a ski fanatic and his eyes lit up when he heard I was from Alaska.  Ha!!

That concluded our day.  Looking a little haggard!!

Bled Vacation 91

We decided to pick up some eats at the store for a simple dinner at the house.  The kids still got to bed late, but they slept in a bit too.

It was a long day, but we all had a great time!

Next up, Vintgar Gorge!
