9 Year Spa Birthday Bash

Nine years?!  I cannot believe I have a 9 year old.  Well, an almost 9 year old.  Her birthday is April 18th.  With there being a 2 week Easter break and the fact that we will be away on her special day, we celebrated early with 6 of her friends.

This girl has turned into quite the planner!  She had her party all planned out by early February!  She did some looking online and found a website that advertised spa parties.  It looked like so much fun, but I knew it would be expensive.  And surely it was.  A party for 6 girls would cost £300 ($498).  I cannot imagine people spending that much on a party!!  I've pulled off a theme party before so I was up for the challenge.

I found a cute invite on pinterest and was so happy with how it turned out.

We found recipes for making chocolate lip gloss to give with the party bags.  I found someone on ebay that had spa party bags all made up with spa essentials at a fantastic price!

I forgot to take photos of the party bags, oops!  Think clear bag with zebra stripes, pink tissue paper  inside stuffed with goodies like nail file, nail polish varnish, lotion, toe separator, etc.
We set up 3 stations.  One for nails, one for facials and another for make up.

We played pass the parcel, a game typically played at parties.  A gift is passed while music is playing.  The person who has the present when the music stops, gets to unwrap a layer of the present.  Another thing that we've typically seen here is that presents are given, but not opened in front of the guests.  I understand this one, it really makes sense.  However, Karis was excited to see what she got and asked all her friends before the party if it was ok to open the presents at the party.  They all agreed and had fun seeing all her presents.

The sweetest gift of all?  A handmade card decorated and signed by each of her friends.  So precious!

Then it was cake time!!  At most parties in England, "Happy Birthday" is sung, candles are blown out and a slice of cake is given in the party bags!!

No, no, no!  How can you not have cake at the birthday party?!?!  We can't, obviously!  It's one of the best parts of the party!!  And my kids almost never eat that slice of party bag cake later anyway!

It was a great party!  Fairly simple, packed with lots to keep them busy.

Now I think I want my own spa party!!

Did you have theme parties as a kid?   Or do you throw theme parties for your kids??

Exploring on My Doorstep

This upcoming year doesn't show much hope for travel for our family.  I've been a bit sad about that.  I'm hopeful for one big trip this year for our 20th wedding anniversary this summer. The possibilities are endless, which is exciting. We'll see!

Seriously though, what do I have to complain about?!  I am within a few hours drive from places like Canterbury, Dover, Oxford, numerous castles, ruins, gorgeous churches,

Converted Church in Surrey

quaint fishing villages, not to mention one of THE most popular cities in the world with endless things to see and do!

London's Westminster Abbey

Some of my fellow travel blogger buddies have inspired me to make these day trips a reality this year!

Elena had me swooning over her photos of Windsor Palace from her trip in early Fall. It's a one hour drive from me!
Gina's beautiful photos of Stonehenge have me wanting to drive west!!  Two hours from my doorstep!
Bonnie's every day life in Bath, England and just being able to pop into The Roman Bath's on any given day!  Or Sarah's trip to this same beautiful city, taking in the sites on an historical walking tour.  I absolutely loved her photos of Bath's Royal Crescent.  Bath, a 2.5 hour drive from my town!

Visiting all these places will keep us busy in 2014! That said, I also wanted to find things in my immediate area that I could easily do on my own while the kids are in school. I decided to search pinterest.  I'd previously used it before to find exotic places I've dreamed of traveling to, why I had never thought to do a local area search before now is beyond me.  I found so much out there. Beautiful sites practically on my doorstep, in my back yard!!

My goal.....to get out and explore the immediate area around me once every week or two!  And Alison's Walk With Me challenge goes along nicely with my goal and gives me some incentive!

I might not be able to travel further across Europe or beyond right now, but I'll do my best to be content to do plenty of local exploring, camera in hand!

Den Building in the Forest

September 17, 2013 0
What was before us was plain to see, an enchanting world all made from trees.....

"Who's house is it?" we asked inquisitively

Squirrels? Butterflies? Birds or Bees?

Could it be Pixies? Elves? Let's go see!

My guys had such a fun time den building with their friends!

Box Hill is a wonderful place for kids to explore, create and imagine.

Thanks to fellow England expat blogger, Tanya at The Other Side of the Road for sharing about this fun place!

Have you ever been den building in the forest?!

Linking up with Travel Tuesday.

Around Horsham

September 11, 2013 0
The locals love their town of Horsham, as do we!
It's funny how people gush over it.  Even people I've occasionally chatted with in nearby towns  will comment how nice Horsham is.
There is a nice mix of the country (just like my post about the woods) along with a decent sized High Street (downtown).
Behind the kids, in these pictures, is the Old Town Hall on Market Square.  Such a gorgeous building that now houses a restaurant.

Just down the street behind the Old Town Hall is the Horsham Visitor's Centre and museum.

The museum is free!!  It's full of artifacts and history about the area.

I love these old street signs!

The garden is lovely!

Old Fire Brigade truck.  Love it!

I loved this sign too!  I'm not sure where it was originally hung.  I never did see any history about it.

All different kinds of bicycles.

Come for a visit and we'd be happy to show you around!

Around West Sussex

A mom that I met at school lived in Maryland for 13 years.  Her kids were born there, so their kids have dual citizenship.  They loved living in America and miss it a lot, but they felt they needed to return to England to be near family.
We have some great and funny conversations about language, life in England as an American and life in America as English.
We dropped the kids off at school and were on a mission to find antique shops and other cute shops with places to stop for tea and coffee.
We were led astray a bit and did not find what we were searching for, but we drove through some quaint towns and my friend showed me some local hotels where we can enjoy cream tea (in America we might know this as having afternoon tea, complete with small sandwiches and desserts).
The first quaint town we found ourselves in was Lindfield.

A sweet little town with a quaint pond at the end of the main street.

We looked in the few shops they had.

I loved this door with a big key!

Beautiful stuff!!

We then decided we needed a morning tea break.  Often times these cute little shops will have a small seating area for tea, coffee and cakes.  Sometimes lunch items as well.

We did a bit more driving around and stopped in Cuckfield (pronounced Cookfield) for lunch.
This was set up in front of a little French bistro.  So pretty!

Below, the South Downs in the distance.

I loved the old homes around here.

The hotel/spa in Cuckfield, Ockenden Manor.

It has such an old world look!

My friend, Lisa, really wanted me to see South Lodge Hotel.

It is quite grand with sprawling grounds.  I felt a bit out of my element, but the servers were so nice and  we enjoyed a cup of tea/coffee on the veranda.  They gave us some little sweet treats for free!  I guess that's what happens when you go for coffee at a grand hotel!

It was a fun day of exploring our county and gave me some ideas of places to take visitors when they come.  So come on friends!  Let me personally show you around our part of England!
