Karlstejn, Czech Republic

KarlstejnCastle

Only an hours train ride southwest of Prague, you won't be disappointed with this idyllic setting.  Karlstejn Castle is perched above the town with the same name.

Walk across the Berounka River and into town.

Lined with shops, restaurants and quaint homes the main street through Karlstejn allows for a slow wander up the hill to the castle.

A large Gothic Castle founded in 1348 by Charles IV, it served as a place of safekeeping for his many treasures.  It is one of the most famous and frequently visited castles in Czech Republic.

On this particular trip we didn't go inside, but if you're going to hike all that way I suggest you do.

However, you won't be disappointed just taking in the view.

This is just one of the many beautiful castles that dot the Czech landscape.

Have you ever thought of Czech Republic being full of so many beautiful castles?

Prague Castle's Stag Moat

You might know that I like to get off the beaten path.

The Prague Castle has some of it's own nooks where you can do just that. It is surrounded by gardens, a vineyard as well as a moat.

The Stag Moat (Jelení Příkop), is a natural ravine of the Brusnice stream, running alongside the castle.  Breeding of deer took place in this area in the 17th century, thus the name.

Just steps away from the side entrance of the castle near the tram stop, can take you from the bustling tourist crowds to beautiful, quiet surroundings where you may only see another person or two.

You can exit the way you came or through a tiny little path taking you back down to the Malostranska metro.

My friend, Mary Ann and I exited near the metro on this particular journey.

If you want to visit the moat this year, you'll have to hurry.  It's only open until October 31.  It will reopen April 1st.

The perspective of the castle, the beauty of the landscape and it's quiet location in the midst of the city make this walk so worth it!!

Have you visited the moat or like to get off the beaten path?

Being an Expat on 9/11/2001

September 11, 2014 11
Just 2 months earlier, we'd arrived in our new home of Prague, Czech Republic.  I was working around the house when Jerry called me from his office to tell me to turn on the news.  To learn of the events on 9/11 was so gruesome for us all.

Being halfway around the world from my beloved home country was gut-wrenching.  I wasn't from New York or DC nor did I know anyone living there, but at that moment I wanted to be home.  To hug my loved ones tighter and to support my country and it's people in this time of need.  It was hard to be away!!

On the flip-side, what I was able to witness was a heartwarming experience!

"Victims of Terrorism" displayed on the St. Wenceslas statue, one of the most iconic statues in Prague, in the days to follow.  A site that's witnessed many important events in Czech history was now a memorial to the lives lost on that fateful day.

The front of the American embassy was equally filled with flowers, candles, tokens and notes of sympathy.

A book was set out in front of the embassy for people to sign expressing their love, sadness and prayers for the people of the United States.

It was so hard to be away, but I was so proud to be an American and so proud of my host country for the love and support expressed during the days and weeks that followed.

It's easy to go about our day as the years go by.  However, I don't think any of us will ever forget where we were or what we were doing on the day of September 11, 2001.

Czech Paradise (Český Ráj)

Cesky Raj, Czech Paradise, travel, Czech Republic

In the Spring of 2007 a quick, 3 day work retreat took us to a pension (small hotel) near the beautiful area known as Český Ráj, translated Czech Paradise, north of Prague.

We had no idea what was in store for us!

Tight passageways leading upwards through the rocks.

Where's Waldo! Can you find the rock climber in the photo below?

Such a gorgeous area that I wish we'd been able to spend more time or get back to before we moved away.

At least I am glad we got to see this beautiful phenomenon.

If you find yourself in Czech Republic, especially if you enjoy hiking or climbing, make your way  to Czech Paradise!  You will not be disappointed!

Would you enjoy making a tight squeeze through these massive rocks?

Foods Across Europe

One of the things I love about having lived in several different countries is exposure to the local foods and learning to make it.

I've decide to feature a few foods from each place that we've lived in our expat journey.  Here goes!

Russia

Vereniki
vereniki, Russian, food, travel

A pasta dough stuffed with various fillings, similar to ravioli.  My favorite vereniki is stuffed with potatoes (Crazy, I know! Pasta stuffed with potatoes, but it's delicious!).  And for a sweet variety, vereniki stuffed with cherries served with a sweet sour cream sauce. Yum!

Salad Olivye (Potato Salad)
Russian, food, travel, salad,

This is my go to potato salad.  Packed full of all kinds of veggie goodness!

Borsch
Russian, food, travel, borsch

Some might be turned off by the beets or the color of this soup, but let me tell you.  There are lots of other flavors going on in there.  It is delicious with that dollop of sour cream!

I've made salad olivye and borsch a few times, but I've never taken photos.  In my google search I came across Natasha's Kitchen.  I fell in love with her blog and she graciously allowed me to use her photos.  Check out some of her Russian/Ukrainian dishes as well as much more!

Czech Republic

Czcch Goulash with bread dumplings
Czech food, food, Czech Republic, travel, goulash

A bit different from the Hungarian goulash, but still so very tasty!  And a fun touch to be served from a pot like the one above.

Trdelnik
Czech food, food, Czech Republic, travel, trdelnik

My favorite street snack!  A pastry cooked over an open flame on a round pin called a trdlo and once finished, rolled in cinnamon and sugar and sometimes almonds.

Spain

You learned from last weeks post how much I love churros!  I also have to add to the list.....

Paella
Spain, Spanish food, food, paella, travel

I fell in love with paella while in Spain.  So much so I knew I needed to learn how to make it!  I blogged about it here.

Austria

Nürnberger Sausages
Nurnberger, Nurnberg, sausage, Germany, Austria

Now, before anyone tells me "wrong country" I do realize the Nürnberger is from Nürnberg, Germany.   I have never been a big sausage fan.  They've always smelled good to me, but I never found one I liked until I discovered the Nürnberger rostbratwurst.  These little gems are sold all over the place and it was while living in Austria that I fell in love with them, therefore, I am sticking them under Austria.  I am so glad there is a store close by here in England that sells these!

Good ole Austrian market fare, homemade chips and pumpkin spread.

Austria, Austrian food, chips, crisps, pumpkin, travel, food

You don't find much pumpkin that is sweetened in Austria.  It's savory in the way of spreads and soups.  And the homemade chips (or crisps) are amazing!  Fresh and crunchy!

England
Cream Tea (scone, clotted cream, jam & tea) and Afternoon Tea are my favorite favourite meal in England!

Sandwiches, scones and dessert!  Yes, please!
