Foods Across Europe

One of the things I love about having lived in several different countries is exposure to the local foods and learning to make it.

I've decide to feature a few foods from each place that we've lived in our expat journey.  Here goes!

Russia

Vereniki
vereniki, Russian, food, travel

A pasta dough stuffed with various fillings, similar to ravioli.  My favorite vereniki is stuffed with potatoes (Crazy, I know! Pasta stuffed with potatoes, but it's delicious!).  And for a sweet variety, vereniki stuffed with cherries served with a sweet sour cream sauce. Yum!

Salad Olivye (Potato Salad)
Russian, food, travel, salad,

This is my go to potato salad.  Packed full of all kinds of veggie goodness!

Borsch
Russian, food, travel, borsch

Some might be turned off by the beets or the color of this soup, but let me tell you.  There are lots of other flavors going on in there.  It is delicious with that dollop of sour cream!

I've made salad olivye and borsch a few times, but I've never taken photos.  In my google search I came across Natasha's Kitchen.  I fell in love with her blog and she graciously allowed me to use her photos.  Check out some of her Russian/Ukrainian dishes as well as much more!

Czech Republic

Czcch Goulash with bread dumplings
Czech food, food, Czech Republic, travel, goulash

A bit different from the Hungarian goulash, but still so very tasty!  And a fun touch to be served from a pot like the one above.

Trdelnik
Czech food, food, Czech Republic, travel, trdelnik

My favorite street snack!  A pastry cooked over an open flame on a round pin called a trdlo and once finished, rolled in cinnamon and sugar and sometimes almonds.

Spain

You learned from last weeks post how much I love churros!  I also have to add to the list.....

Paella
Spain, Spanish food, food, paella, travel

I fell in love with paella while in Spain.  So much so I knew I needed to learn how to make it!  I blogged about it here.

Austria

Nürnberger Sausages
Nurnberger, Nurnberg, sausage, Germany, Austria

Now, before anyone tells me "wrong country" I do realize the Nürnberger is from Nürnberg, Germany.   I have never been a big sausage fan.  They've always smelled good to me, but I never found one I liked until I discovered the Nürnberger rostbratwurst.  These little gems are sold all over the place and it was while living in Austria that I fell in love with them, therefore, I am sticking them under Austria.  I am so glad there is a store close by here in England that sells these!

Good ole Austrian market fare, homemade chips and pumpkin spread.

Austria, Austrian food, chips, crisps, pumpkin, travel, food

You don't find much pumpkin that is sweetened in Austria.  It's savory in the way of spreads and soups.  And the homemade chips (or crisps) are amazing!  Fresh and crunchy!

England
Cream Tea (scone, clotted cream, jam & tea) and Afternoon Tea are my favorite favourite meal in England!

afternoon tea, tea, food, English food, travel,

Sandwiches, scones and dessert!  Yes, please!

Churros in Madrid

Madrid, Spain, Plaza Mayor

I love having local foods whenever traveling.  Especially of the sweet variety!  And there is nothing like having churros in Spain!

The history of the churro isn't completely certain.  It's thought that it was invented by Spanish shepherds having named the pastry after the navajo-churro sheep, the pastry looking like the horn of the sheep.  The other thought is that Portuguese sailors learned of something similar in China.  After bringing it back, the Spaniards learned of the pastry, putting their own spin on it.

Either way churros have been eaten by Spaniards as breakfast or an afternoon snack for many years.

There are two chocolateria's in Madrid that stand out as the oldest and best.  Valor, a chocolateria starting in 1881 and San Gines is the oldest churreria, established in 1894.  If you find yourself in Madrid, you'll have to give one or both a try!

We asked around as to which one was the best and were encouraged to try Valor.  We should have tried out San Gines too, but we didn't live in the city and ran out of time before moving.  Just means we have to go back to give it a proper and thorough test!

You don't have to go too far to try churros though.  Street festivals and touristy areas in Spain always seem to have some close by.

In many different varieties too!

My favorite is actually with cinnamon and sugar, but when in Spain....

Have you had churros or been to a chocolateria in Spain?  I highly recommend it if you haven't!

Speaking of food.......next week is our travel theme and we'll be talking about, you guessed it, food!!!  What's been the food(s) that have stuck out to you the most in your travels?  It could be your best, your worst, your strangest, favorite restaurant or all of the above.  So get your travel foodie posts ready!

This week I'm featuring Amy from Creatrice Mondial and her post on the 6 Best Mediterranean views.  I've seen parts of both Greece and Italy, but oh, these views!!  My favorite is Cinque Terre, Italy.  Take me there, stat!
Be sure to see who Bonnie and Melanie featured.  We'd love for you to visit around and get to know others in the link up.

Carnival in Spain: Burning the Sardine

With it being carnival season around the world, I thought I would highlight our school's Carnival experience in Spain in 2011.  To give you a little background for any new readers, we lived in the suburb of Alcobendas, outside of Madrid, for just over a year. While there our kids attended a public Spanish school.

Each day of the week leading up to a school parade, was a theme, similar to Spirit Week in the US. You can read about it here.

At the end of the parade the Entierro de la Sardina was performed.  The burial, or in this case, the burning of the sardine. The link explains extensively how it is celebrated around Madrid. The tradition varies around the country.

The kids were given 2 sardine scales and instructed to write something that they want to see disappear.  It could be a poor attitude, a bad habit, etc. The burning of the figure of a sardine symbolizes an act of cleansing. Burning of the old allows the growth of the new.

Burning a figure at the end of riotous days of partying allows order to be restored in preparation for the observation of Lent.  Everything is put right by this one act at the end of it all.

We loved witnessing and joining in the celebration of Carnival.

Have you observed Carnival in Spain or somewhere else around the world?

Each week Bonnie, Melanie and I feature a post from the previous link up.  I really enjoyed Carly's post, from Let us Wanderlust, on New Orleans.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon in New Orleans and remember these tricks pulled on the streets of New Orleans.
It's enjoyable to read about her adventures across America as an Australian expat.

Our Best Stays, Family Style

February 02, 2014 0
Emma, and Kelly, my fellow England bloggers invited me to participate in their link up about our most memorable night's sleep.  It's difficult to narrow it down to one, so I'll share a few.

Being a family of 5 and finding places to stay while traveling can be a lengthy process.  Surprisingly though, I enjoy the challenge of finding that perfect place that's nice, inexpensive and convenient.

Most hotels don't work for us.  Then you have the challenge of finding a holiday rental that will allow you to rent for shorter than a week.

It might take some time, but we always manage to find something.

Here are a few of my favorite stays.

Altea, Spain - September 2010

Look at that view!!  This was such an amazing last minute score.  All you can see was water!  Out on the balcony you can see the small street and short beach area and hear the waves lapping on the rocks.  Being a rocky beach keeps the numbers down, which we like.

I actually enjoyed waking up early before the rest of the family to capture these sunrises.

Benalmadena, Spain - June 2011

We didn't have an ocean view, but the pool view was pretty!

Benalmadena is located about 25 minutes south of Malaga.  We fell in love with the quieter beaches when we'd visited this area before on our crazy quick trip.

Brighton, England - April 2012

We stayed in a lovely little cottage on a twitten.

Homer, Alaska - September 2012

We stayed in the Land's End Hotel located at the end of the Homer Spit.  A place I grew up going every summer to camp and deep sea fish for halibut.  I always dreamed of staying in this hotel as a kid.

Fort William, Scotland - August 2013
Dalchreggan Guest House

It's easier to find a B&B in the UK that holds a family  We had a nice large room.  The down side, it's extremely awkward and embarrassing if your kid decides to have a fit!  Yeah, that happened!

And one that I think will go down in history for us and that we would return to time and again would be our lovely stay on the border of Lahich in Liscannor, Ireland at Rannagh View.

This gorgeous house was so spacious and beautiful and had great views.  We were in awe of how nice it was.  The owner was so nice and the wife had fresh baked scones for us.

Aww, the view!

And that's our best stays, family style.

Where has been your best stay on your travels?

Churros & Chocolate

September 01, 2011 2
A couple of weeks before leaving Spain we took one last trip down to the center of Madrid. I wanted to pick up a tiled name plate like we got Jerry's parents for Christmas. And we just wanted to see downtown one last time. We had to include a stop at one of the famous Churro cafes. We chose Chocolaterias Valor.  I love Churros! My favorite way is to sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, but the traditional way is with a pot of chocolate. thicker than hot chocolate, but thinner than chocolate syrup. Still yummy!

Madrid, churros, travel,

Sure!  Why NOT a sugar packet!
First time to order Coke.
Karis took these pictures of us.  She did a pretty good job!

Our little photographer did great on this one!
I loved seeing this draped through the street to help keep it cool!
Trying on some Spanish gear!
Next up, Plaza Mayor!  Stay tuned!!
