9 Year Spa Birthday Bash

Nine years?!  I cannot believe I have a 9 year old.  Well, an almost 9 year old.  Her birthday is April 18th.  With there being a 2 week Easter break and the fact that we will be away on her special day, we celebrated early with 6 of her friends.

This girl has turned into quite the planner!  She had her party all planned out by early February!  She did some looking online and found a website that advertised spa parties.  It looked like so much fun, but I knew it would be expensive.  And surely it was.  A party for 6 girls would cost £300 ($498).  I cannot imagine people spending that much on a party!!  I've pulled off a theme party before so I was up for the challenge.

I found a cute invite on pinterest and was so happy with how it turned out.

We found recipes for making chocolate lip gloss to give with the party bags.  I found someone on ebay that had spa party bags all made up with spa essentials at a fantastic price!

I forgot to take photos of the party bags, oops!  Think clear bag with zebra stripes, pink tissue paper  inside stuffed with goodies like nail file, nail polish varnish, lotion, toe separator, etc.
We set up 3 stations.  One for nails, one for facials and another for make up.

We played pass the parcel, a game typically played at parties.  A gift is passed while music is playing.  The person who has the present when the music stops, gets to unwrap a layer of the present.  Another thing that we've typically seen here is that presents are given, but not opened in front of the guests.  I understand this one, it really makes sense.  However, Karis was excited to see what she got and asked all her friends before the party if it was ok to open the presents at the party.  They all agreed and had fun seeing all her presents.

The sweetest gift of all?  A handmade card decorated and signed by each of her friends.  So precious!

Then it was cake time!!  At most parties in England, "Happy Birthday" is sung, candles are blown out and a slice of cake is given in the party bags!!

No, no, no!  How can you not have cake at the birthday party?!?!  We can't, obviously!  It's one of the best parts of the party!!  And my kids almost never eat that slice of party bag cake later anyway!

It was a great party!  Fairly simple, packed with lots to keep them busy.

Now I think I want my own spa party!!

Did you have theme parties as a kid?   Or do you throw theme parties for your kids??

This is No Horsin' Around

Karis has had quite the love of horses for awhile now.  She had mentioned, before our move, about taking riding lessons and I just never figured we'd find it possible in our budget.  After moving into our house and meeting our neighbors, we learned from them of a lady who gives riding lessons from her country farm.
We talked about it for a few weeks, looked at riding gear (a helmet and boots.....this ain't no Texas cowboy ridin'!  Ha!!) and when Karis offered to use some of her birthday money to help purchase boots and a helmet, I knew she was serious!
I really love the set up.  It's not a riding school, it's just a farming family in the country helping a handful of kids (girls, really) learn how to care for, groom, ride the horses and muck out their stalls.  That's exactly what we were looking for and she has loved it!!
Two hours every Saturday morning is what she looks forward to!

Brennan and Reegan love to come out and pet the horses and sometimes give them a treat!

I've always had a love for horses, enjoyed a bit of trail riding as a kid, and just being around them and giving a pat to their noses is a treat.  What a special animal!

I haven' actually been able to see her ride.  Most parents drop them off and leave.  I want to stick around soon and get some photos.  Karis is learning to trot right now.  She's a bit impatient and expects to know how it's done immediately, so it's teaching her some patience!  The owner says she is a good and quiet rider and is doing well!

Washed by the Water

What a joy it is to see your child come to a saving faith in Jesus Christ!

Karis made the decision to follow Jesus a couple of months ago at an after school Bible time led by some long time missionaries in this part of the world.  They part-time teach at our school and attend the church start, Crossway, that we've been a part of. We thought Karis was close to making a decision when she did just that!

I was so happy to learn that our church was going to hold a baptism once the weather warmed.

You know it's Europe when the couple just over from your baptism site are topless!  Ha!
We even had a swimmer pop up in our little cove while we were singing!  Ha!

There were 5 people to be baptized.

We did a little singing first.

Asking those important questions!

So awesome to have daddy baptize his girl!

I chuckled at this photo!  I told her she looks like a little chipmunk!  She laughed and said "It was FREEZING!"  Ha!!

Our daughter and sister in Christ!

Afterward we headed to our pastor's home for a cookout!

One of the men in our church spoke some words about baptism.  He had a dirty shirt on, replacing it with a white shirt and said some other really cool stuff.  I thought it was a great visual for the kids.....and for me too!

And like any good church function, we had some good eats!!

We rounded it off by heading back to the water hole/baptistry for a short swim with a couple other families.  Karis earlier said it was freezing and then wanted to go back for more!! Ha!

What a special, wonderful, memory making day!!

Spy Girl Party

Back in January I made the kids pick their birthday party theme for their April & June birthdays.  Why so early?

Jerry was headed to the US and to get any kind of themed party stuff we had to decide early so he could pick it up while in the States.  I ordered all their plates, table covers, goodie bag items and tissue paper.

Karis had recently seen the Spy Kids movies and Spy Next Door and decided she wanted a Spy Girl Party.  Because she was turning 7, I also incorporated the 007 theme.  Oh yeah!  I knew this was going to be fun!

I scoured all kinds of blogs, online stores, cake ideas, party favors and decoration ideas.  We came up with one fun party!!

It is so hard to limit how many kids can come, so we narrowed it down to mostly kids her age from her class and from church.  We had over 20 kids!!

I had been seeing all kinds of banners and printables on Pinterest.  I learned that my friend, Kristi, had made the cupcake toppers, subway art and food labels for her son, Eli's Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Party in January.  She inspired me and I made all the decor myself.

This will be picture heavy, but worth it!!

I started out with a secret mission invite message to our agents.  They had to decode a secret password to enter the party.  Making the decoder was really simple.  I had character fonts, so I made the decoder chart myself.

Food table

We had detective dogs, secret agent salsa, covert op cupcakes and forensic fruit.

I found small plastic shot glasses and filled them with salsa.  No double dipping in my salsa!

I found a really fun drink called Magic Potion.

It's koolaid made into ice cubes with lime soda poured over it.  It gives it a fruity flavor and changes colors.  It was a big hit with the kids!  They kept coming back for more and more!!

I ordered this fun "Spy Girl" iron on for the birthday girl!
She's already gotten a hole in it and a rhinestone has come off.  Mental note, don't buy iron on rhinestones for an active 7 year old and remind her not to play outside in a brand new shirt!!

I made tissue paper poms, a spy girl banner a "top secret, spy central" banner and found foot print, fingerprint, question mark and even bullet hole graphics to pin up all over.

I made these cute dynamite table decorations out of paint brush roles, crepe paper and the wick is leather string.  So easy!

The kids picked agent names from a list.  Brennan was "Rocky."

We had a laser game set up.  The kids had to make it through without touching the lasers.

I saved up toilet paper rolls to make binoculars.

Cute little man!!

Time for cupcakes!!
I normally pour my time into making a cake, but I told Karis we were just doing cupcakes this year.

These weren't candles for blowing out, but they sure put on a show!

Kristi caught this awesome photo too!

Gifts!
I love this picture of her laughing!

All the kids were enthralled by this fun shaped present.

Kristi & Eli got Karis a pogo stick/ball (the fun shaped present above).  Kristi had to give it a whirl!

Mollie couldn't let Kristi have all the fun!  Ha!

Our last activity was a scripture scavenger hunt that I found from Titus 2 Homemaker.  It was different scriptures that gives you the location of the next clue. It was fun!!  Here the kids are getting their first clue.

They found their goodie bags decorated with a mustache, tie and inside were magnifying glasses, sunglasses and a few treats!

Reegan, aka Butterfly, has a question!

I look like I'm poking myself.  Ha!
Like my red fingers?  All that magic potion making!

Group photo!!  Love this shot!!
How do you get a good group shot of this many kids?  Give them 'staches and shades!!

The adults couldn't let the kids have all the fun!!

Mustached Couple!

I was exhausted!!  But we had oh, so, much fun!!
A party to remember, for sure!
