Bled, Slovenia

Bled was one of our first vacations in 2000 after moving to Russia. The beauty of it made such an impact on me.  Who could not gush over a medieval castle high on top of a cliff overlooking Lake Bled and it's island with a 17th century church perched in the middle?!

Last year we had the chance to visit for a second time before moving away from Austria.  I gushed all over again.  Such a beautiful location surrounded by beautiful mountains!!

Here are the top 5 things to do in Bled.

1.  Take a carriage ride around the lake.  We did this on our first trip to Bled and loved it.  It takes about an hour.  Our driver, and his horse, knew this trek so well the driver fell asleep and kept falling to the side.  Ha!



2. Visit the cliff top castle.  You can walk up or drive part way, but there will still be some climbing to do.  The overlook is amazing and the castle itself is beautiful!! 

3.  Take a Pletna boat ride to the island.  You can pay round trip or one way.  The round trip option only allows for an hour on the island.  Honestly, it isn't enough time to explore, however, I think it's a cheaper option to pay for the trip up front.  Boats are constantly coming and going, so it would be easy to get a return ride allowing you to wander at your leisure.  You could also hire a row boat on your own.

4..  Hike through Vintgar Gorge.  The gorge is located just outside of Bled.  It's a series of paths and wooden bridges that take you on a beautiful walk above the Radovna River.  Just beautiful!

5.  Enjoy Bled's own kremina rezina, a cream cake invented by a chef 60 years ago at the patisserie at the Park Hotel in Bled. Yum!
